What Types of Plaster Wall Finishes Are There? Shikkui Lime Plaster, Diatomaceous Earth, Textured Coatings, and OASIS+ HYPER NEO as a New Option

When thinking about interior wall materials, many people have heard the term “plaster wall finish.”

In Japan, traditional materials such as shikkui lime plaster and diatomaceous earth are often associated with plaster walls. In recent years, textured coating materials that can be applied with a trowel or roller have also become more common.

However, even if these materials are all described as “plaster wall finishes,” their ingredients, functions, strengths, and suitable applications can be very different.

In this article, we will explain the differences between shikkui lime plaster, diatomaceous earth, textured coating materials, and OASIS+ HYPER NEO, which offers a different approach as an interior functional wall material.

What Is Shikkui Lime Plaster?

Shikkui is a traditional Japanese lime plaster mainly made from slaked lime, or calcium hydroxide.

It has been used in castles, storehouses, traditional houses, and cultural buildings in Japan. Its beautiful white appearance, calm texture, and fire-resistant characteristics are among its well-known features.

One of the major characteristics of shikkui is its strong alkalinity. This alkaline nature is considered to help create an environment where bacteria and mold are less likely to grow.

However, shikkui gradually hardens by reacting with carbon dioxide in the air and changing into calcium carbonate. This means that the surface condition does not remain exactly the same as immediately after application.

In areas with poor ventilation, trapped moisture, dust, or dirt, mold may still occur depending on the environment.

Therefore, it is important not to assume that “shikkui never grows mold.” The substrate, humidity, ventilation, and living environment should all be considered.

Shikkui is often described as a “breathing wall,” but it may be easier to understand it as a material that makes use of traditional texture, alkalinity, fire resistance, and vapor permeability, rather than as a material whose main strength is moisture absorption and release.

When used over traditional earthen walls, its benefits are easier to bring out. However, when applied thinly over vinyl wallpaper, the conditions are different from traditional earthen wall construction. In such cases, it may be used more for texture and atmosphere than for its full traditional function.

What Is Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous earth is a natural material formed from the fossilized shells of diatoms, a type of algae.

The shells of diatoms are mainly made of silicon dioxide, also known as silica. Because diatomaceous earth has many fine pores, it has been used as an interior wall material associated with moisture control and odor adsorption.

Diatomaceous earth wall finishes are often known for their image of humidity control and deodorizing performance.

However, it is important to understand that not all diatomaceous earth products are the same.

The performance and safety of a product can vary depending on the amount of diatomaceous earth it contains, whether it is calcined or not, what binder is used, whether resin, pigments, preservatives, or anti-mold additives are included, and how the product is manufactured.

It is also important not to judge a product only by the words “natural material.” Even natural materials can support mold growth if moisture and organic matter are present.

On the other hand, some products include additives or resins to improve workability, storage stability, or anti-mold performance.

In other words, diatomaceous earth products should not be treated as all the same. It is important to check what kind of diatomaceous earth is used, how much is included, and what it is mixed with.

What Are Textured Coating Materials?

In recent years, there are also interior materials that are closer to paint or coating materials but can create a plaster-like texture with a trowel or roller.

Paints are generally designed to create a uniform film. Textured coating materials, on the other hand, are used to create thickness, patterns, and decorative texture.

These materials offer a high degree of freedom in color and design, making them suitable for decorative interior finishes.

However, even if the surface looks like a plaster wall, the level of moisture absorption and release depends on the product.

Is the purpose to enjoy design and texture, or to improve the indoor environment?

This distinction is important when selecting a wall material.

Where Does OASIS+ HYPER NEO Fit?

OASIS+ HYPER NEO is not shikkui lime plaster, not general diatomaceous earth, and not a typical textured coating material.

It is an interior functional wall material based on a different concept.

Its key feature is the use of mesoporous silica, a material with nanoscale pores.

“Mesoporous” simply means a structure that has many extremely small pores. In general, mesoporous materials are classified as porous materials with pore sizes of approximately 2 to 50 nanometers.

These fine pores support the ability to absorb and release moisture from the air.

When humidity is high, the material can absorb moisture. When the air becomes dry, it can release moisture. This moisture absorption and release function is expected to help improve indoor comfort.

In addition, the material is expected to adsorb odor-causing substances, dust, and fine particles together with moisture.

OASIS+ HYPER NEO is not simply a “natural material applied to the wall.” It can be understood as a functional wall material designed to work with the indoor environment through its fine pore structure.

Mold Control Is Not Only About Killing Mold

When people think about mold control, they often imagine killing mold with strong chemicals.

However, in housing, the most important point is to avoid creating an environment where mold can easily grow.

Mold tends to grow when several conditions are present, such as moisture, temperature, nutrients, and poor air circulation.

Even if the surface is treated temporarily, mold may return if the moisture problem remains.

OASIS+ HYPER NEO aims not simply to suppress mold temporarily with strong chemicals, but to help create an indoor environment where moisture, odor, and microbial problems are less likely to occur.

Of course, if mold is already present, the condition of the substrate and proper surface preparation must be checked. Applying a wall material alone does not solve every problem.

That is why it is important to inspect the site and check the substrate, ventilation, source of moisture, and application area.

Safety and Test Data Are Also Important

Interior materials are used in spaces where people spend time every day.

That is why not only appearance and function, but also safety confirmation is important.

OASIS+ HYPER NEO has not only long-term application examples after eight years, but also documents and test data related to moisture absorption and release, fire resistance, safety, odor, and viruses.

However, what matters most to general customers is not simply listing difficult numbers.

What customers really want to know is:

“What happened at the actual site?”

“How can this be proposed for the area I am concerned about?”

“Is it suitable for my own home?”

When necessary, test data and documents can be explained in an easy-to-understand way.

Packaging and Leftover Materials Also Matter

When choosing a wall material, it is important to consider not only the finished appearance, but also how the material is handled and disposed of.

OASIS+ HYPER NEO is a type of wall material in which powder is mixed with a liquid component on site.

The powder material is delivered in paper packaging, which makes disposal easier and reflects consideration for environmental impact.

At the same time, there are still areas for future improvement, such as the container used for the liquid component.

A truly environmentally conscious material should be considered not only in terms of the finished product, but also in terms of packaging, application, leftover materials, and disposal.

Summary: Do Not Choose a Plaster Wall Finish by Appearance Alone

There are many types of plaster wall finishes, including shikkui lime plaster, diatomaceous earth, textured coating materials, and functional wall materials using mesoporous silica.

Shikkui offers traditional beauty, alkalinity, and fire-resistant characteristics.

Diatomaceous earth is associated with moisture control and adsorption as a porous natural material.

Textured coating materials offer design flexibility and decorative expression.

OASIS+ HYPER NEO is a new type of interior functional wall material that makes use of the fine pore structure of mesoporous silica and considers moisture absorption and release, odor adsorption, microbial control, fire resistance, and safety in a comprehensive way.

The important question is not simply “Which material is the best?”

The real question is, “Where will it be used, and for what purpose?”

North-facing rooms, closets, washrooms, dressing rooms, and bedrooms are all areas where moisture and mold concerns can appear.

You do not have to renovate the entire house at once. Consultation can begin with only the area that concerns you most.

When choosing a plaster wall finish, consider not only the appearance, but also the material itself, its function, safety, and how it supports everyday living after installation.

OASIS+ HYPER NEO offers a new approach to creating a more comfortable and安心 indoor environment, starting from the areas of the home that concern you most.
